Congratulations on your weather station purchase! Now comes the (sometimes) hard part: finding a spot to install your station. You want your readings to be as accurate as possible. We’ve written this blog with some weather station mounting ideas for you to consider.
A Galileo Thermometer is a sealed glass tube filled with liquid, typically ethanol, with glass spheres filled with colored liquids and weights attached. As the temperature changes, the liquid expands or contracts, which allows the glass bubbles to rise and fall.

On May 31, 2013, a tornado struck El Reno, Oklahoma. This tornado was historic because it was the widest tornado and had some of the fastest ground wind speeds ever recorded by mobile radar – 296 mph. The El Reno tornado didn’t cause significant damage, as it passed through mainly rural areas around El Reno and west of Oklahoma City. However, the loss of life, including three experienced storm chasers’ deaths, shocked the meteorological community.
Weather watching is a fascinating hobby, but it’s certainly not a cheap one. Most weather stations can easily run into the hundreds of dollars, which prices out a significant number of us. If budget is a concern for you, a cheap weather station is probably your best bet.

We don’t make it a secret that we’re big fans of Davis weather stations. They might not be the fanciest home weather stations, but they have a proven record of reliability that few other companies can match.
We will start by saying if you don’t own a Davis weather station, the Davis AirLink air quality monitor might not be your best option. However, if you do, and have already upgraded to the new WeatherLink Live access point, it’s a fantastic deal.

AcuRite is likely one of the world’s most prolific weather instrument manufacturers. Chances are you’ve seen at least one AcuRite weather station at your local retailer: retailers like Walmart, Target, and Home Depot sometimes sell the AcuRite weather stations (or both) in their brick-and-mortar stores.

The Ambient Weather brand has been around a long time, initially a great place to find deals on all kinds of weather instruments, but now selling its own branded weather instruments and gadgets.
I’m somewhat biased: I’ve had my Davis Vantage Vue wireless weather station installed in my backyard since September 2016. But as a result, I can provide you with a long-term review with many more positives than negatives.
Ambient Weather’s weather stations have become what I expect to see in mid-range models. The company all but defined the budget end of the spectrum with the WS-2902 series, which performed almost as well as the Davis Vantage Vue — and offered best-in-class smart home connectivity. I couldn’t wait to test the Ambient Weather WS-5000 out for myself.
You might call the Davis Instruments Vantage Pro2 the “granddaddy” of personal weather stations. This model has been around for the better part of two decades: I owned a first-generation Vantage Pro in the mid-2000s.
