It was starting to show its age, so I ordered and installed a new Wireless Vantage Pro 2, about 6 months ago. I did not purchase the dongle for the second unit, erroneously assuming I could just use the one I had. Upon having problems, I called Davis Instruments. They indicated that older model is not compatible with the current monitor. I ended up using the older monitor with the new unit.

Since I had a new monitor, I attempted, successfully, to revive the older unit. Working side by side, the two units produce nearly identical results, much to my surprise! And, both compare favorably, considering the price differential, to the Campbell Scientific station I set up a couple of years, ago.

Now, after the long-winded introduction….
I am in the process of moving all of my computer operations from Windows to Linux. I have already converted the CSI programming. Now I am looking at the Vantage Pro 2 units, and need a connection for the second monitor. Obviously, I do not need the Windows software that is bundled with the dongle. Are you aware of a source to acquire the dongle only? Or, are you aware of a better option?

Hey Thomas! My understanding is that WeatherLink Live replaces the console in receiving data. While there is an ethernet port on it, to my knowledge that’s for a direct connection to the router versus a cabled connection. I had our test WS-5000 installed for quite an extended period. In my experience, it is probably the closest you’ll get to Davis in terms of accuracy without the Davis premium. Plus, there are the smart home capabilities, which I’m not sure Davis will ever offer at this point. I hope this helps.

Since I have a wired Pro2 that just had its anemometer go out I am considering switching to the Ambient W-5000. That would not be that much more than this, plus the new anemometer. But it would be good to know if this can work with a wired system. And I have heard this requires an annual subscription to upload data. Is that correct?
